Fareed Hassen, 91 of Stamford passed away Saturday, July 24 at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral service was held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 28 at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Pastor John Erwin officiating. Burial followed in the Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home. Fareed was born on March 10, 1930 in Stamford, Texas to D. and Frieda Hassen. He has two sisters Nadia and Huda and they grew up in Stamford, Texas. In 1968, Fareed and his parents and sisters made a trip to visit his only cousin in Lebanon. While he was there, he met Insaf Saab and they were married on September 28, 1968. They made their home in Stamford. They were the proud parents of a daughter, precious Amal and a granddaughter, Kylie Davis that were the pride of their lives. After 47 years of a beautiful marriage Insaf passed away. Two years later he married Jane Appling, a family friend for over 50 years. Jane and Fareed have enjoyed a beautiful relationship with joy, happiness and love for more than 3 ½ years. In addition to Jane, Amal, Kylie and Nadia; Fareed is also survived by his son-in-law, Jesper Andersen and bonus grandchildren; Sydney and Christopher Andersen; nephew and nieces Jeff, Mickie and Annabelle Bragalone; Bob, Emily, Becky, Bobby and Blake Bragalone; Pam, Tom, Tristan and Conner Arceneau; and Stacey, Greg, Jacob and Isabelle Bruening. In 1955 Fareed received a degree in architecture from the University of Oklahoma. In June of 1957, when his father passed away, he came home to be with his mother and help run the family business. They operated Hassen’s Department Store for 50 years. Fareed was active in the community having served as a Trustee for St. John’s United Methodist Church, worked with the Salvation Army for 65 years, he was Congressman Charlie Stenholm’s Finance Chairman for 15 years, was on the Stamford City Council for 6 years, and served on the Hospice of the Big Country Board. Fareed was The Past President of the Jaycees, The Rotary Club and United Way. He was on the Board of the Texas Cowboy Reunion and First National Bank to mention a few more activities Fareed wholeheartedly participated in; one of his favorites being the West Texas Rehabilitation Center where he served for over 28 years. Fareed was awarded Man of the Year twice and recently received honors with the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Stamford Chamber of Commerce. He was grateful for all the people that have tried to make Stamford a better place to live. He especially wanted to thank the West Texas Rehab Center, Hospice of the Big Country, Dr. Kenneth Cooper, Dr. LaNoard Bayouth and Dr. Farely Neasman for the personal interest they have had for Fareed’s long-lasting health. Fareed lived a good life always with love and happiness and looked forward to spending eternity with his Lord and Savior.
